The WI's of the rainforest
Does this sound familiar? A group of women, who meet regularly to enjoy each other’s company, talk about their families, learn new skills, organise local events and help make their community a better place to live… meet the Ashaninka Mothers’ Groups, living in Peru’s Amazon rainforest.
The parallels with the Women’s Institute are uncanny. So much so, that we’re asking over 200,000 WI members to show their support for the Mothers’ Groups by saving tokens from our Yorkshire Tea packs. We’ll then turn tokens into funds to help the Mothers’ Groups – perhaps by buying them threads and looms so they can make handicrafts to sell, or by sending members on public speaking courses so have the confidence to stand up for their rights. Giving the Mothers’ Groups the means to help their community will help the 25-000 strong Ashaninka community to continue to act as ‘guardians of the rainforest’, as they have done for centuries.
