The Disappearing Rainforest
Rapid deforestation
An acre of rainforest is lost every second of every day – and half of the world’s rainforests have already been lost, forever.
The commercial picture
In many parts of the world rainforest is being cleared for commercial agriculture and pasture, in particular cattle farming, soya and palm oil production. Rainforests are often home to valuable resources – hard woods and timber, gold and copper, and oil – the extraction of which can all lead to local deforestation, along with infrastructure changes and road building, which in turn lead to further deforestation.
Disappearing in our lifetime
At the current rate of clearance, it’s estimated that all tropical rainforests will be lost by the middle of the century.
