Rainforest Facts
Rainforests are some of the world's most ancient and complex ecosystems.
A thousand years ago tropical rainforests covered as much as 12% of the earth’s surface. Today they cover less than 5%, yet they are home to more than half of the world’s plant and animal species. These ecosystems are an amazing resource that is being destroyed, forever.
The rainforest is where many modern food staples originated, including tomatoes, corn and chocolate; they are vital to the earth’s weather and are responsible for regulating temperature and weather patterns far beyond the forests themselves; and in addition they remove and store huge amounts of carbon from the atmosphere and release oxygen that we breathe.
